Beyond Measure is a work for viola and piano in three linked movements inspired by analytic idealism and the philosopher Bernardo Kastrup's critique of materialism. The music traces consciousness through three stages: a free, unmetered state prior to embodiment; a struggle as the viola is drawn into rigid meter and structure, echoing the reduction of experience to measurable "matter"; and finally, a return to freedom, transformed by the recognition that matter is never more than a construct.
